Easter Recap

What a Glorious Day! “Like Jesus’ friends visiting the tomb, our day started before sunrise,” says Pastor Keith Fletcher. The Fletchers have a private tradition of having a “family sunrise service” of their own on Easter morning,. “Sarah and I went out on the deck to watch the eastern sky. God had used two jet pilots to draw a cross in the sky over Johnston City just as the sun was rising.”  This amazing “sign” and beautiful sunrise was a subtle reminder that the mission of our church is to lift up the Cross for our community. In John 12:32, Jesus said, “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (ESV) The rest of the morning was cool but pleasant as we gathered at JCity Church to celebrate Christ’s resurrection. As people gathered in, some came early and enjoyed a delicious breakfast, while others sat under the capable teaching of Roger Legendre in his adult Sunday school class. Pastor Keith welcomed our guests and offered them a free book by Thom Rainer, We Want You Here. This book communicates what we as a church would like to offer you and your family. Easter Will Be a ‘Glorious Day’

In 1909, a Presbyterian pastor and evangelist penned these words: One day when heaven was filled with His praises, One day when sin was as black as could be, Jesus came forth to be born of a virgin— Dwelt among men, my example is He! Living, He loved me; dying, He saved me; Buried, He carried my sins far away; Rising, He justified freely forever: One day He’s coming—O glorious day! This is the first verse and refrain of the classic hymn “One Day” by J. Wilbur Chapman.  In our hymnals today, the song usually has five verses that cumulatively proclaim  the gospel. Each verse is an exposition of one line of the chorus. The song poetically tells the entire story of Christ’s glorious pre-existence, humble birth, perfect life, sacrificial death, powerful resurrection, and promised Second Coming. In 2009, the contemporary Christian band Casting Crowns released a new version of this song. It became a hit single on Christian radio and even made it to the top of the charts on some secular stations.  Here’s Mark Hall explaining what’s so special about this song and why the band felt it needed to be reintroduced to the church.
