Restarting Sept. 5 — Johnston City Free Will Baptist Church
Our Wednesday night student discipleship ministry resumes September 5. Supper will be served 6:30-6:55 pm. Student activities begin at 7:00 and conclude at 8:00. We have classes for all ages including adults. Our class structure resembles the learning centers in Johnston City public schools: (1) PreK-2nd grade (2) 3rd-4th grade (3) 5th-6th grade (4) 7th and up.
Adult class options will include sessions on parenting, family finance, conflict resolution, and more. Please watch Facebook or this website for information about upcoming topics.
Johnston City Free Will Baptist Church of Johnston City will serve meals to children (ages 1-18) as part of the Summer Food Service Program administered by the Illinois Board of Education and funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These meals will be served in the context of three ongoing summer children’s activities at the church and at a neighboring church. The dates and location of operations are as follows:
Meals prepared and served at the church. Activities follow (through 7:45).
(3) Washington Avenue Baptist Church Vacation Bible School—
July 23-27, Sunday-Thursday (5:30-6:30 pm).
Meals prepared at our church and transported to Washington Avenue just before service. Activities follow the meal.
This is eighth year Johnston City Free Will Baptist has served as host site for JC Kids’ Lunch Bunch in cooperation with many other area churches and organizations. At Lunch Bunch (in addition to receiving free nutritious, balanced lunches) children participate in a wide variety of activities and interact with guests, such as entertainers, athletes, coaches, team mascots, musicians, artists, crafters, health professionals, community workers, and educators.
Though the church serves as host and administrator of these programs, other local churches and community organizations provide volunteers, programming, and funding. We encourage your participation as well. Please contact us about sponsorship and volunteer opportunities.
Last year, we served 2,212 USDA-approved children’s meals. Our goal in 2017 is a 10 per cent increase over that figure. With your help, we can do that. We plan to provide handicap-accessible transportation as needed for participants who reside inside the city limits of Johnston City. This part of our program is now underwritten by local contributions. Children who need rides should call the church office (618-983-5254).
Parents and caregivers may also eat lunch with children at no cost. Funds for adult meals are provided by sources outside the USDA. Donations are currently being accepted by the church and are fully tax-deductible.
To summarize and clarify, the funds you donate will be used for transportation costs; to prepare meals for parents, caregivers, and volunteers; provide programming and resources for after-lunch activities; purchase extra food for kids to take home on weekends; and to help promote Lunch Bunch to children and families in the community.
The Saturday before we begin serving weekday lunches, we are planning a family-friendly Lunch Bunch Kick-Off Celebration, June 3, 10:00am—2:00pm in our church parking lot. We’ll have inflatable games, cotton candy, hot dogs, healthy snacks, free books, and fun activities as well as information about the summer meals program.
If you would like to help as a volunteer or need more information about Lunch Bunch, you may contact Pastor Keith Fletcher at 618-983-5254 or 618-952-4909. Lunch Bunch also has a Facebook page: JCLunchBunch.
